The 4th of July is a great patriotic, holiday weekend that many look forward to months ahead. Whether it be to celebrate our Independence Day, the fireworks, an extra day with friends and family, or the true kickoff to summer BBQ’s – it is well enjoyed! It is important to enjoy the recognition of this day, as well as the festivities and leisure time that come with it, but if you find it’s actually a kickoff to getting sidetracked from your health and fitness goals for the rest of the summer, read on to find simple tips on how to enjoy, feel satisfied and stay healthy!
TIPS TO MAKING YOUR 4TH OF JULY A HEALTHY ONE:
1. Start the weekend with a great workout and healthy breakfast.
2. Stay hydrated with water throughout the day.
3. Think before you drink! With multiple parties and BBQ’s that last hours in duration, it is easy to over consume! Alternate caloric/alcoholic beverages with glasses of water. Also, remember some drinks have high-calorie, high-sugar mixers (like Margaritas) that can top 500+ calories!
4. Bring your own healthy side dishes. Ex: Veggies and hummus, pita chips or veggie chips with salsa, green salad, and fruit salad.
5. Grill lean meats, chicken, veggies and fruits instead of hotdogs and sausages! Also, try chicken skewers, veggies skewers and marinated portablello burgers.
6. Use small plates to serve yourself. If you must, then go back for seconds.
7. Always start with vegetables. Then move on to protein and then on to starches.
8. Choose one dessert to enjoy!
9. Focus attention on friends and family! Socialize away from food table to avoid mindless eating.
10. Pick one day of the three day weekend to be your “treat” day, while still being mindful!
