Seasonal Produce is Packed with Antioxidants and Fiber!
Free radicals are highly reactive molecules that can create a domino effect of reactions, which can cause damage to the cells in your body. Oxidative stress occurs when free radicals outnumber your antioxidant defense mechanisms. Seasonal produce is full of antioxidants that can help protect your body from this potential oxidative stress and keep you feeling healthy! Antioxidants from foods we eat are stored in the body and mobilized from tissue stores during time of stress to protect cells from the increased production of free radicals. They can safely interact with free radicals and terminate the reaction before vital cells are damaged.
In addition to antioxidants, seasonal produce is also packed with fiber! Dietary fiber is the part of food your body can’t digest or absorb. This means that fiber passes relatively intact through your stomach, small intestine and colon and out of your body. Since it is not digestible, fiber helps keep you feeling full and satisfied, helps with digestion and regulates bowel movements (and who doesn’t want that), and helps control blood sugar levels. Be sure to get plenty of fiber (and antioxidants) by consuming a wide variety of fruits and vegetables, preferably seasonal!
