Many of you have probably heard the saying before, “It’s about your skill power and not your will power.” When it comes to nutrition and maintaining a healthy lifestyle, this is so very true! When you are challenged by time and by the many convenient foods and snacks offered, it takes more than will power to lead a healthy style, it takes skill! Two of my favorite phrases to use with clients are, “Planning is the bridge between knowing and doing,” and “Environmental Control.”
It takes time to develop new skills, make changes to your lifestyle and build sustainable healthy habits. But, it’s important to start somewhere! Where are you most challenged in your fueling plan and health plan? Would it help you to plan a few days worth or a weeks worth of meals in advance? Would it be helpful to keep healthy foods around you? Try the below “one-liners” to enhance your healthy skill set!
PLANNING IS THE BRIDGE BETWEEN KNOWING AND DOING
When you plan in advance, you are more apt to make healthy choices!
Choose one or all of the following to add to your week:
-Write out a grocery list before going to the store and have a healthy snack! Stick to your grocery list when there.
-Look at your calendar and block out a few hours 1-2x/week to grocery shop and chop up your fruits and vegetables.
-Each morning or night, write out what you will have for meals and snacks that day and make them in advance so it’s easy to take on the go.
-Know you are going to a restaurant? Look at the menu on-line and pick out your healthy meal choice in advance.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONTROL
Control what foods and drinks you keep in your environment! Surround yourself with healthy choices.
-When you make a grocery list, consider what and where you are shopping for. The house? The office/workspace? Your car? A trip?
-Stock your home with healthy fruits, vegetables, proteins, grains and snacks.
-In the car or office a lot? Be sure to have pre-portioned snacks, bars and fruits available to you. That way you will be reaching for an optimal fueling choice versus fast food or candy.
-Know you will want to have a treat here and there? That’s okay. Go out and enjoy a single serving, rather then having an abundance in the house.
