It seems to be something that comes with this profession. People assume I am always judging them for what they are or aren’t eating because I am a dietitian nutritionist. The funny thing is, is that most of the time I feel judged or scrutinized for what I am eating! It’s okay, I understand that’s part of my job, and I am happy to be an example or provide insight into what I am fueling my body with and why. I remind people, I am here to help, not to judge.
If a person is seeking advice, an answer to a question or have asked insight on what they are eating, then sure, I will answer as it pertains to them and their specific needs. Otherwise, in most of these social situations, I am more concerned with enjoying the fuel I have in hand and the company I am surrounded by. When it comes to working with my clients, I need to find the right balance of challenging and pushing them enough to move them closer to their goals, while being supportive that some of their lifestyle and fueling choices will take time to change.
One thing clients and friends know, is that I am believer in balance and the 80/20 rule. I say that imperfection is perfection. That healthy fueling plans can still include some more of those enjoyable treat foods that might not be so great for us. It really just depends on how much and how often! This is what the 80/20 rule refers to. 80% of the time enjoy high quality fuel that supports your mind, body, health, performance and goals. 20% of the time enjoy those treat foods that might not be so great and know it is okay! This could be ~2 treat meals or items per week; maybe dessert or fried foods, or a night out! Just remember to be mindful and plan in advance how much and how often! Even when I enjoy my treat meals, I still pair it with vegetables, though – because it just feels good!
Think you have more of a 50/50 or 40/60 breakdown? Work meal by meal to get those whole food, clean fueling choices to triumph the treat meals and start getting to 80/20 or 90/10! I would bet that you will start to feel better and enjoy both your healthy and treat meals more.
