Follow these holiday tips to improve your health!
- Stick to your normal fueling strategy.
– For example, if you always start the day with breakfast immediately when waking up and have a healthy go-to meal, keep with it and start your day in the right mindset! - Don’t skip meals.
– Skipping meals can lead to over hunger and then later, overindulgence. Continue to eat frequently throughout the day, and even try to have a light snack like fruit or a salad before a dinner party. This will help lead to a less ravenous appetite. Think of it like grocery shopping – you never want to go on an empty stomach! - Be selective.
– Holidays do offer traditional family foods or seasonal recipes that you want to enjoy. You can make a strategy to have a bite of your most wanted foods or pick out your top few choices and have three bites maximum. Enjoy but moderate!
– Being selective can also mean evaluating your food. Do you typically have cheese and crackers or cheesecake? If so, skip out on those this time around and choose something you rarely eat.
– Concentrate on Quality, not Quantity. - Don’t overeat.
– Overeating does not say, “I love you.” And refusing to eat seconds doesn’t mean rejection.
– Share the holiday spirit and your food! Cut the impact and double your pleasure by sharing your treats.
– Use smaller plates.
– Travel with oranges, apples, pears, carrots, and nuts/seeds for snacks.
– Start off meals with vegetables and fiber rich foods.
– While celebrating the holidays means long days and long nights, start off your day with exercise and combine all of the tips above! - Plan ahead!
– Plan ahead for your daily exercise and balance high-calorie and high-fat choices with low-calorie choices.
