I was skimming through the Oprah magazine and came across a nice one-pager called, “The Fridge Diet” by Sara Cann. The article gave six tips on how to organize your refrigerator so you are more likely to reach for healthy foods, instead of the less optimal food choices. The idea is that the way you store your groceries can affect what and how much you eat. I completely agree! I know the way I package and display my food, in addition to the shelf placement affects what I grab first. Granted, the first step is environmental control. This means keeping the food and hydration choices that are most supportive of your goals, in your environment. Next step, how to organize those food choices and work around the other ones. Read on for some tips!
TIPS FOR CHOOSING HEALTHY WHEN HUNGRY…IN YOUR OWN KITCHEN
1. Nutritious foods go on the middle shelf. Middle shelves get the most attention!
2. Put indulgent snacks in opaque storage containers. Out of sight, out of mind! If you really want it, you will look for it.
3. Keep produce fresh longer. Try a product called “Fenugreen FreshPaper”. They may help keep veggies and fruits two to four times longer.
4. Do some prep work. Clean and cut fresh fruits and vegetables in advance! When you are really hungry, will you want to do the work? This way healthy snacks are ready to be eaten on the spot or to take on the go. Store them in your line of sight!
5. Be a minimalist. Don’t over-pack the fridge…you risk hiding the good stuff and letting more items expire. Keep it fresh and aim for a half-inch space between items.
6. Post your grocery receipt on the door. A great visual inventory! Plus a little motivation to eat your money’s worth.
