Finally warm weather is spreading across the country! My family and friends on the East Coast are smiling in the warmth of the sun and texting to let me know that they are finally experiencing warmer temperatures than we are on the West Coast. Not only does Spring bring joy to many, it also brings seasonal allergies! Research suggests that certain foods in the diet may help ease allergy symptoms in some people.
Do you suffer from seasonal allergies, that can not only be annoying, but make it difficult to breathe right, bother your sinuses and disrupt your sleep?
- Garlic, Onions, grapes, cherries, pears, apples, berries, cabbage, cauliflower: These are rich in quercetin, a phytochemical that has antihistamine properties, good for clearing nasal congestion.
- Warm fluids, soups, tea: help to relieve sinus congestion.
- Foods containing omega-3 fatty acids (wild fish – salmon, tuna, mackerel, trout, olive oil, canola oil, walnuts, flaxseeds): may decrease asthmatic symptoms.
- Spices like cayenne pepper and turmeric can help thin mucus and clear nasal passages, as well as ease allergy symptoms.
- Vitamin D fortified foods and supplements. Vitamin D deficiency is linked to asthma and allergies.
- Oranges, red peppers, broccoli, and strawberries – all rich in Vitamin C
- A few things that may provoke allergies because they contain dietary histamines: aged cheeses, sulfur containing wine, processed meats and sauerkraut.
