I admit it, I enjoy working out. Now, just because I enjoy it, doesn’t mean that it is always easy for me to do or that I don’t try to talk myself out of it on occasion. I love challenging my body and my mind, I love the meditative qualities running and yoga bring to me, and I especially love knowing that the work is worth it, as it’s helping my body, my mind, and the possible quality and longevity of my life by all of the benefits it brings. One way, though, that I know I need to stay engaged in a lifestyle of fitness, nutrition and health is to make it fun!
Family that trains together stays together!
I love being around people and I love being trained by people. So, one way I keep fitness fun for me is having workout buddies and finding classes that both challenge and inspire me. I change up my workouts frequently and never do the same workout more then twice in one week. For example, I run by the beach or trail run, take yoga, take a cross training class and do a stair workout (pictured above). When my goals change or I sense this is becoming too repetitive, I add in new classes like spinning or something I have never tried before. What works for me, may not work for you, of course! It depends on what your goals are, the types of exercise you enjoy are and the accessibility around you. But ask yourself, how can you make fitness fun? Is it a neighborhood walk, DVDs inside, classes, hiking, training with people or with music? What will you be willing to try to learn to like, if none of these seem appealing? Even when you find something fun, it can still be challenging! But hopefully you find the reward in accomplishing it and knowing that you are working for YOU.
The same can be said for nutrition. How can you make fueling well for your body and mind more fun? Do you like to cook with people? Go to the Farmer’s Market? Design food in an artistic and colorful way? Make up your own recipes? Enjoy bringing food to work? Sharing dishes? Find those things that you enjoy as the foundation to building a fun and fit lifestyle. Know your reasons WHY and use that as the core to your development!
