All About Carbohydrates
Did you know that carbohydrates, which are broken down to glucose in the body, are the main source of energy for the brain? It is only during extreme situations that the body will break down protein to fuel the brain. The brain prefers glucose, which primarily comes from carbohydrates, as does your muscle and body when working out intensely. In addition to the fiber and vitamins / minerals they provide, they are an essential component of your daily nutrition so your body and your brain have adequate fuel. Not only that, the more you exercise and the more intensely, the more support your body needs from them to refuel your energy stores.
And, yes, quality does matter. When you are incorporating them into your balanced meals, opt for complex rather than simple carbohydrates. In other words, aim to consume more whole grains, high fiber and minimally processed carbs. Quality is important, as is the quantity, which is determined by your individual health needs, genetics, metabolism, and activity.
