When October rolls in, the chatter about costumes begin, the colors of the storefront change, and the shelves are filled with a plethora of Halloween candy offerings. My favorite candy association with this season are candy corns. While I was thinking about why I like this highly processed candy the other day, a term came to mind, “Artificial Delight!” Although I think some candy can be enjoyed on occasion as a treat or pure enjoyment (part of the 20%), it struck me that beyond the fun, the taste and the additional calories, sugar and fat that most of these colorful treats offer, there is an endless list of ingredients, artificial colors and preservatives. For example, this is listed in the ingredients of candy corns: Artificial Colors, (FDC Yellow 6 Lake, Red #40, Red 40 Lake, Yellow #5, Yellow #6, Blue 1 Lake, Blue #1, Yellow 5 Lake). These don’t quite fall into the eating clean category, and will often show up on clients food sensitivity results, meaning they can contribute to a variety of symptoms people experience related to food intake. As a nutritionist, I naturally look for a healthier way to enjoy a holiday. When searching, I found some healthy, creative and fun treats that now have my attention more than the candy corns!

Although all were quite creative, here is an example of a simple one I enjoyed!
APPLE BITES
Ingredients
- Apples
- Slivered almonds
If you’re not going to serve them right away, baste the apples with orange juice to keep them from browning.
Directions
- Just quarter and core an apple, cut a wedge from the skin side of each quarter, then press slivered almonds in place for teeth.
